Captured on April 3, 1957, this historic photograph shows Communicable Disease Center (CDC) bacteriologist Alan Bernstein, PhD, who worked within the Virus and Rickettsia Section, Laboratory Branch, at the Cumberland Field Station in Montgomery, Alabama. Here, Dr. Bernstein was examining suckling mice for signs of infection. Suckling mice were especially useful in the laboratory diagnosis of poliomyelitis and other polio-like diseases. Dr. Bernstein’s research included experimental virology and studies involving poliomyelitis and viral encephalitis.
