Captured in April 1957, this historic photograph shows Communicable Disease Center (CDC) virologist Matthew A. Bucca, PhD, inside the Virus Unit of the Virus and Rickettsia Section, Laboratory Services, at the Cumberland Field Station in Montgomery, Alabama. Here, Dr. Bucca was examining test tubes containing diagnostic reagents in their final stage of preparation. Hundreds of such tubes containing antigens and antisera needed for diagnostic testing were distributed annually by CDC to laboratories throughout the country.
