Captured in April 1957, this historic photograph shows Communicable Disease Center (CDC) virologist Seymour S. Kalter, PhD, who served as Chief of the Diagnostic Methodology Unit, Virus and Rickettsia Section, Laboratory Branch, at the Cumberland Field Station in Montgomery, Alabama. In this view, Dr. Kalter was making observations using a light microscope while working alongside laboratory technician Rachael H. Gorrie.
