Captured in 1978, this historic photograph shows Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer Pierre Claquin, MD, a member of the EIS Class of 1978. Prior to joining EIS, Dr. Claquin participated in the World Health Organization’s Smallpox Eradication Program in Bangladesh. During and following his EIS service, he worked in malaria surveillance at CDC and subsequently continued an international public health career involving primary health care, maternal and child health, immunization, and poliovirus eradication.
