Captured on April 3, 1957, this historic photograph shows Dr. Andrew Fodor, Chief of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Virus Diagnostic Methodology Unit, preparing a suspension of minced monkey kidney tissue in a solution contained in an Erlenmeyer flask. The flask was placed on a magnetic stirrer to provide gentle agitation of the suspension. This laboratory procedure was performed at the Virus and Rickettsia Laboratory within the Special Investigations Unit in Montgomery, Alabama.
