Captured on May 17, 1983, this historic photograph shows U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Margaret M. Heckler touring the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). During her visit to one of the organization’s laboratories, Secretary Heckler met with CDC laboratory staff members. Standing immediately to the left of Secretary Heckler is Walter R. Dowdle, PhD, CDC Assistant Director for Science and Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, while she shakes hands with J. Steven McDougal, MD, standing on the far left.
