This illustration, entitled “Generalized Dorsal Views of Female Hard and Soft Ticks”, depicts generalized dorsal views of a female hard tick (left) and a female soft tick (right), highlighting key morphological differences between the two groups. The female hard tick possesses a dorsal shield, or scutum, and exhibits a capitulum that is visible from above, as well as eyes and festoons in the generalized example shown. In contrast, the soft tick lacks a dorsal scutum, and its capitulum is not visible from the dorsal surface. The illustration also contrasts the tapered posterior body of the hard tick with the more bluntly rounded posterior body of the soft tick.
