This illustration, entitled “Capitulum of a Hard Tick (Ventral Aspects)”, depicts the ventral anatomy of the capitulum, or mouthpart region, of a hard tick. The capitulum consists of a central hypostome, paired chelicerae, paired palps, and the basis capituli. Each palp is composed of four segments, or articles, labeled I through IV. The illustration also identifies the digits and sheath of each chelicera, structures associated with the tick’s attachment to and penetration of host tissue during feeding.
