This image depicted a close view of a newborn’s face, revealing a condition known as neonatal conjunctivitis, or gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum, caused by a maternally transmitted gonococcal infection. The disease affects the corneal epithelium, causing microbial keratitis, ulceration and perforation.
