Caption:
This photograph depicts an anterior view of a patient’s upper body. The man had crossed his hands over his chest, revealing signs of pigmentation abnormalities, which had been due to a case of pellagra, a vitamin B3 deficiency. Pellagra occurs when the body fails to absorb niacin, (vitamin B3), or tryptophan, an amino acid. Pellagra is characterized by scaly skin sores, diarrhea, mucosal changes, and mental symptoms.
