This image depicts a close view of a patient’s left hip, which revealed the presence of an erythematous maculopapular rash. Initially, it was suspected that this rash was due to a secondary syphilitic condition, however, after further analysis, it was determined to be due to a herpes zoster outbreak, otherwise known as shingles. The same virus that is the cause of chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3), which normally occurs as a childhood disease, can later manifest itself as a zoster skin rash.
