Caption:
This 1974 photograph depicts what had been a horse that was displaying symptoms of the arboviral disease Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE). Blood samples from this horse were later tested, to see if the animal was in fact, suffering from VEE. The results of those tests are not known. Etiologic pathogens responsible for equine encephalitic diseases are transmitted to horses by mosquitoes, with reservoirs being various bird species.
