Caption:
This photomicrograph reveals ultrastructural details exhibited by three fertilized, Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. The ovum on the right represents a decorticated example, exhibiting an absent outer layer. After fertile eggs embryonate, they become infective after 18-days to several weeks. If ingested, larvae can hatch, causing the intestinal infection known as ascariasis, which infects children more often than adults.
