Caption:
This photomicrograph reveals ultrastructural details exhibited by a single Schistosoma japonicum ovum. S. japonicum is one of the trematodes that causes the parasitic disease schistosomiasis. Its egg displays a vestigial, laterally protruding spine, which is more of a remnant of a spine than a distinct spine. Schistosomiasis infections are diagnosed when the presence of their eggs in the urine or stool sample is confirmed.
