This photograph depicts a front view of a Petri dish culture plate containing Thayer-Martin growth medium, which had been inoculated with a cervical smear specimen, and gave rise to numerous, small, darkly-pigmented colonies. Thayer-Martin medium is used when transporting, or isolating N. gonorrhoeae, and N. meningitides bacteria. Thayer-Martin medium consists of Mueller-Hinton agar plus 5% chocolate sheep blood and antibiotics, in order to improve the selectivity in colonial growth. In this case, a positive oxidative test revealed a positive result for the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria.
