Caption:
This image was captured in 1976, after the discovery of pesticide contamination of a Chattanooga, Tennessee water supply system. Chlordane, a chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticide, had entered the potable water supply in a three-block area of a neighborhood, affecting 105 residents, after spraying had been carried out due to the presence of termites in the area. This man was holding a water nozzle in his shower, which was dispersing water contaminated by the chlordane. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Stewart Laboratories of Knoxville, Tenn., handled the water sampling.
