Caption:
This photograph depicts a close dorsal view of a member of the Argasidae family of North American soft ticks. This tick’s mouthparts are not visible from this dorsal perspective. This female Argasid tick, had laid a batch of eggs, and over a period of several years, following each blood meal, she will lay one batch after another, unlike the female hard tick, like the one pictured in PHIL 5968, which will die after laying her batch of eggs. Some soft ticks are known to be a vector for the spirochetes that cause relapsing fever.
