Known as leukocytosis, this micrograph depicts an elevated number of normal white blood cells. This patient, from whom the blood sample was harvested, also was experiencing an accompanying systemic staphylococcal bacterial infection. Note the band, or immature, and segmented, or mature neutrophils.
