This is a ventral view of a larval, ornate sheep tick, Dermacentor marginatus, that had been cleared and mounted. This ixodid, hard tick specie, is known to be a reservoir, and vector for the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), caused by a member of the tick-borne encephalitis virus complex, as well as the bacterium, Coxiella burnetii, the cause of the disease known as Q fever.
