This photograph depicts a close view of a 19-year-old woman’s anus, who had presented with an perianal granuloma inguinale lesion of about 8-months duration. See PHIL 18900, for a photomicrograph of a tissue sample extracted from these perianal lesions. Referred to as genital ulcerative disease, and Donovanosis, the disease is caused by the intracellular Gram-negative bacterium, Klebsiella granulomatis formerly Calymmatobacterium granulomatis.
