This image depicts a close view of a patient’s chest, highlighting the morphologic details exhibited by a herpes zoster, or shingles outbreak. A differential diagnosis was conducted in order to rule syphilis, as a cause for this cutaneous rash. Though syphilis is bacterial in its origin, caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum, herpes zoster is due to the varicella zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3), which is the cause of chickenpox.
