Caption:
This photomicrograph of a decolorized, Gram-stained urethral exudate specimen, revealed the presence of numerous Gram-negative, staphylococcal bacteria. This sample was obtained from a patient suffering from a case of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). In the male, urethritis involves an inflammation of the canal that begins at the neck of the bladder, and runs through the length of the penis to the glans penis, leading to the outside of the body, while in the female, the much shorter urethra ends above the vaginal introitus. Urethritis can be caused by a viral, or bacterial pathogen, direct trauma to the urethra, or chemical irritation.
