This photograph depicts Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), research biologist, and electron microscopist, Cynthia Goldsmith, shown sitting in front of a transmission electron microscope (TEM), in 2004. During the last 20 years at CDC, Ms. Goldsmith's work, as an electron microscopist has repeatedly played a key role in the rapid identification of emerging pathogens, including hantavirus, Nipah virus, and SARS-coronavirus. Many of her wonderful transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images appear throughout the Public Health Image Library’s collection.
