While wearing a protective mask and suit, this worker was using a power sander during a 1999 exercise, demonstrating an exterior renovation method that was typically used on residences, where lead-based paint was present. This was classified as use of a high-exposure renovation method. The University of California, Berkeley, and local members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America conducted the demonstration. These organizations requested that industrial hygienists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), conduct a health hazard evaluation in order to assess workers’ lead exposures, inherent in performing various tasks. Power finish sanding was found to be among the high-exposure renovation methods, hence, this worker was appropriately attired so as to avoid skin, or inhalation exposure, to possibly dangerous airborne lead particulates.
