While wearing a protective mask, this worker was performing the activity of wet manual paint scraping in a 1999 exercise, demonstrating an exterior renovation method that was typically used on residences, where lead-based paint was present. This was classified as use of a high-exposure renovation method. The University of California, Berkeley, and local members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America conducted the demonstration. These organizations requested that industrial hygienists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), conduct a health hazard evaluation in order to assess workers’ lead exposures, inherent in performing various tasks. This method or sanding was found to be among the low-exposure methods, and is therefore, recommended under federal guidelines. Note that this worker was appropriately attired so as to avoid skin, or inhalation exposure to possibly dangerous airborne particulates.
