This 1999 photograph depicted a worker, who was using a power sander equipped with a high efficiency particulate air filter exhaust system that collected paint particulates, demonstrating an exterior renovation method that was used on residences, where lead-based paint was present. Due to the implementation of a HEPA vacuum filter, this was classified as use of a low-exposure renovation method. The University of California, Berkeley, and local members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America conducted the demonstration. These organizations requested that industrial hygienists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), conduct a health hazard evaluation in order to assess workers’ lead exposures, inherent in performing various tasks. Note that this worker was appropriately attired so as to avoid skin, or inhalation exposure to possibly dangerous airborne particulates.
