This 1991 photograph depicted a worker, who was vacuuming lead-based paint debris with a high-efficiency vacuum, equipped with a proper air filter able to remove lead particulates from the environment, during a lead paint removal pilot project. See PHIL 7346 for another view of this activity. In response to a management request from Ohio University, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a health hazard evaluation in order to assess worker exposures and their cleaning effectiveness, during a project to clean old buildings grossly contaminated with deteriorated lead-based paint. All of the cleaning methods evaluated were hazardous, but wet methods offered the best control of airborne lead levels.
