This 1991 photograph depicted a worker wearing a protective mask and suit, while preparing a surface for wet scraping, by first saturating it with water, during a lead-based paint cleanup pilot project. See PHIL 7345 for another view of this activity. In response to a management request from Ohio University, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a health hazard evaluation in order to assess worker exposures and their cleaning effectiveness, during a project to clean old buildings grossly contaminated with deteriorated lead-based paint. All of the cleaning methods evaluated were hazardous, but wet methods offered the best control of airborne lead levels.
