Caption:
This historic August 1937 photograph, depicted a number of dead fish in Minnesota’s Cokato Lake, at the outlet of the lake’s main tributary, Sucker Creek. The purpose of the image was to show the effects of industrial pollution on bodies of freshwater, and the native fish and wildlife. As one of a series of instructional images, used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train its state public health workers, the purpose of the photographs, and the accompanying training, was focused on protecting water supplies from toxic contamination due to the discharge of industrial pollution.
