The image was captured during the Red River water quality survey of 1931-1933. It was one of a series of instructional pictures, used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train its state public health workers. The focus of the images, and the accompanying training, was on protecting water supplies from bacterial contamination due to the discharge of industrial waste and municipal sewage.
