This historic August 1932 photograph, depicted a sewer outlet on the banks of the Red River, at First Street in Fargo, North Dakota. Raw sewage could be seen gushing from the end of the sewer pipe. The image was created during the Red River water quality survey of 1931-1933. It was one of a series of instructional pictures, used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train its state public health workers. The focus of the images, and the accompanying training, was on protecting water supplies from bacterial contamination due to the discharge of industrial waste and municipal sewage.
