This historic 1921 diagram, which had been digitally enhanced, depicted the water pumping station at Benson, Minnesota, at the time of a water-borne typhoid fever epidemic in August 1914. In the center of the sketch, the artist had indicated a leak in the pump pit, which contributed to the water supply’s contamination. This was one of a series of instructional images, used by the Minnesota Board of Health, in order to train the state's public health workers. The focus of this image, was on protecting water supplies from bacterial contamination due to incorrect disposal of waste, which might foul ground water, rivers, lakes, and streams. The descriptive information accompanying this drawing mentioned the specific citation, “Special Report of the Epidemic of Typhoid Fever at Benson, Minnesota, 1914, Sixth Biennial Report, Minnesota State Board of Health. p. 87”.
