This photograph depicts a ventral view of an engorged female lone star ixodid, or hard tick, Amblyomma americanum. To view additional images related to this tick species, see PHIL 4407, 8676, 8677, 8678, 8679 and 8681 through 8685. Note the anal orifice located in the center of the ventral abdominal surface, and the tick’s four pairs of jointed legs, placing it, and all ticks, in the phylum, Arthropoda, and the class, Arachnida. You are also able to see the tick’s capitulum, or mouthparts, projecting from the anterior end of the tick’s body.
