Caption:
This 2006 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image highlighted the morphologic features depicted by the central green colored cluster of immature flower buds of a flowering dogwood blossom, Cornus florida. Upon initial inspection, people will mistake the bracts, or modified protective leaves, which encase this cluster, for the flower's petals. However, the actual flower petals are extremely small, and delicate, and will erupt from these clustered, rounded buds.
