Magnified 119X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural details of one of the very small flower buds clustered in the center of a white flowering dogwood blossom, Cornus florida. Due to the extremely small size of the centrally located clustered flowers, the larger colored bracts, that are actually modified leaves, which protect the flowers themselves, are also mistaken for flower petals. If you look carefully, you'll notice that the small flower petals come together in a confluence at the bud’s tip, and will burst open at this point when the flower blossoms.
