This transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image depicts a single Orientia tsutsugamushi bacterium, formerly known as Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, that was free within the cytoplasm of a mouse brain capillary endothelial cell. The infected cell (right) shows signs of hypertrophy, while the uninfected adjacent endothelial cell (left) remained normally thin and flat.
