This historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted two African American foundry workers, who were not wearing respirators, or goggles. Workers, who don’t wear the requisite protective garments, like filtered breathing masks and gloves, can be exposed to dust particulates during many industrial processes. The dust itself can be a respiratory irritant, and carried by the dust, there are often toxic agents that can be the cause of irreparable respiratory damage, including cancer, emphysema, and pleuritis.
