This October 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a stonecutter, who was shaping a granite gravestone by using a powered drill sander, while inside a Kansas workshop. This man was not wearing any barrier to inhaled dust, like a filtered breathing apparatus, or any eye protection against airborne, or splintered particulates. To the left of the sanding tool was a jury-rigged ventilator, which had been curved in order to catch dust particles escaping from the cutting surface. Workers like this mason, can be exposed to potential respiratory health hazards as well as other physical injuries when working in the stone cutting and quarrying industries.
