Caption:
This historic image from the 1970s, provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted a NIOSH chemist who was demonstrating techniques to insure the safe handling of chemicals, when testing field samples sent to Cincinnati. Note that the chemist was wearing protective gloves, gown, mask, and was behind a glass barrier guarding his face from accidental contamination due to chemical spills. The ventilated hood worked under the principle of negative pressure, which brought the laboratory air into the hood, and sent it out through a filtered system, thereby, preventing contaminate vapors from escaping into the lab environment.
