Two women workers and a male worker break blocks of TNT with wooden pickaxes on a wooden table at the Ravenna, Ohio Ordnance Plant before delivering them down wood chute to metal container below. Metal tools could not be used for many operations in the plant because it could generate a spark. The Ravenna Ordnance Plant manufactured ordnance containing trinitrotoluene (TNT) for the military during World War II. USPHS personnel wore Army uniforms while working on turf of this Army-run facility. The photograph was made during the industrial hygiene and engineering activities conducted by U.S. Public Health Service personnel at the plant in September 1943. Occupational safety and health concerns included preventing dermatitis among the workers and reducing the risk of explosions in the plant.
