A U.S. Public Health Service physician in Army uniform examines the hand of a female ordnance worker, as two other workers pour TNT into mortar shells at the Ravenna, Ohio Ordnance Plant. The Ravenna Ordnance Plant manufactured ordnance containing trinitrotoluene (TNT) for the military during World War II. Workers uniforms had only buttons. They weren’t allowed to wear anything with a zipper, because this could cause a spark (personal communication from former worker, 1993) The USPHS personnel wore Army uniforms while working on turf of this Army-run facility. The photo id badge of the woman on the left and the “ROP” logo on her work uniform are clearly visible.
