Caption:
Depicted in this 2007 photograph, was Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Biologist, Shon Nguyen, working in a biological safety cabinet (BSC), conducting a test, in order to validate a rapid HIV nucleic acid extraction and amplification process. The BSC provides a negatively pressurized, experimental setting, which allows no air to flow from within the cabinet, back out into the laboratory environment. This means that airborne pathogens, or toxic vapors, are drawn back into the hooded cabinet, and up into a filtered ventilation system, thereby, avoiding the spread of contaminants throughout the laboratory.
