Caption:
This 1968 photograph depicted former Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Epidemiologist, and one of the former Directors of the Global Smallpox Eradication Program 1966 – 1970, J. Donald Millar, MD, DTPH, standing next to a sculptural representation of the Yoruban deity Shapona, the deity of smallpox, who is considered the intermediary between man and God. Yoruba is both an African population, mainly occupying the countries of Nigeria and Benin Republic, and the belief system practiced by these individuals. It is to deities, like Shapona, to whom one prays out of respect, and hope in alleviating the devastation wrecked by diseases like smallpox.
