This 1962 photograph depicted the face of a 15-year-old Canadian boy, who was part of a missionary trip to Brazil, and contracted the form of smallpox known as alastrim. Caused by the DNA virus, variola minor, the characteristic maculopapular rash due to his illness, shown here, two weeks post onset. Alastrim is a milder form of smallpox, caused by Variola major.
