Under a magnification of 1200X, which is 2.4 times greater than PHIL 11270, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology found on the surface of an antenna, situated on the head region of a termite, found in Atlanta, Georgia. Look at PHIL 11269 through 11273, for additional views of this structure under successively higher magnifications. In this particular view, the distal broken tip of the sensory structure is visualized. Note the socket-like depression, at which point the next antennal segment would articulate. The hairs adorning the antennal surface, which are actually chitinous extensions of the exoskeleton, are known as setae, and along with its eyes and antennae, provide the organism with information about its environment, which allows it to act in accordance with its environmental elements.
