Under a magnification of 250X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology found at the distal end of one of the six jointed legs of a termite, which had been discovered in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. Also take a look at PHIL 11275 and 11276, for additional views of this structure, under successively higher magnifications. In this particular view, you will note the presence of numerous hairs adorning the appendicular surface. Known as setae, these are actually chitinous extensions of the exoskeleton. These sensorial setae, as well as its eyes and antennae, all provide the organism with information about its environment, which allows it to act in accordance with its environmental elements.
