Under a magnification of 60X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology found on the head region of a termite, which had been discovered in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. Look at PHIL 11277, for another view of this structure under a higher magnification. In this particular view, you will note the presence of numerous hairs adorning the appendicular surface. Known as setae, these are actually chitinous extensions of the exoskeleton. These sensorial setae, as well as its eyes and antennae, all provide the organism with information about its environment, which allows it to act in accordance with its elements.
