From the “Illustrated Manual for the Recognition and Diagnosis of Certain Animal Diseases”, published in 1982, by the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot and Mouth Disease, this photograph, taken at a bovine necropsy, depicts an interior view of the heart, revealing a number of lesions atop the heart’s endocardial lining. The animal was ill with what was determined to be lumpy skin disease (LSD). Caused by a Poxviridae family member, this virus causes the eruption of skin nodules to take place over all regions of the bovine body.
