Caption:
From 1970, this image depicted the right foot of a 2-year-old Oregonian child, who after having received a smallpox vaccination, sustained what is termed an accidental implantation of the newly-introduced vaccinia virus. Accompanying this phenomenon, the child also developed hand, foot and mouth disease. Note the presence of a lesion on the right second toe. Also note that in the background, the left foot displayed a lesion in the region of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the great toe.
