Caption:
This image depicts a condition known as a rectal prolapse in a female child due to a parasitic Trichuris trichiura infestation. The rectum has lost its intestinal support due to this nematode invasion, and has emerged from the anal opening. Note the numbers of worms atop the rectal mucosal lining. See PHIL 414, for a close view of a female T. trichiura worm.
